It was announced earlier today that Joey Holt (3-0) will make his return to the cage at Pittsburgh Challenge Series 5. He will face The Ultimate Fighter alumnus Julian Lane (5-2-1) in what might become the main event of the show.
Holt took a leave of absence from the cage after he stopped Nate Hall in the opening minute of the first round back in January of 2012. Although he was absent from the MMA scene he was not gone from combat sports. He decided to step into the boxing ring, testing his skills there.
According to our friends over at Standthemup.org, Holt went undefeated inside the boxing cage, going 4-0. He has since decided to take a break from boxing for the meantime, at least, to return to the cage.
His opponent, Lane, has seen better times. He is currently sitting 2-1-1 in his last four outings which all occurred this year. Before the current downfall he started his professional career on fire winning his first four bouts.
After his fourth fight he was selected to the sixteenth season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF). He won his first fight to get into the house but lost the next one thus ending his run on the show. After the season commenced he returned back home to Ohio. He returned to the local scene to get some more fights in hopes of getting the call back to the big show.
Things unfortunately did not work out that way for Lane. He now takes on Holt who is essentially in the same place Lane was when he started out. This match-up is a good one for both fighters. For Lane if he can pick up the victory will indicate he is still a force to be reckoned with in the area. He is also in a desperate need of the win to right the now sinking ship.
Holt on the other hand has more to gain if he is able to get his hand raised after it is all said. Not only will be keep his record unblemished but he will also get the notoriety of defeating a former cast TUF cast member.
The two will meet on November 27th, 2013 at the Iceoplex in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. We will keep you informed about the event as more information becomes available.
