Ohio native Devonte Smith (8-1) earned a UFC contract for his vicious TKO victory over Joe Lowry (7-1) at Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series in Las Vegas on Tuesday night.

Lowry shot in for a takedown against the cage, and Smith proceeded to land multiple unanswered elbows to the side of his head before the bout was halted by the referee.

Smith made news after the bout, calling for a rematch against fellow Ohioan John Gunther (7-0) for his first UFC bout. Gunther is the only fighter to defeat Smith, as he won a hard fought battle via third round TKO last year in the 2017 BluegrassMMA Pro Fight of the Year. Gunther is also in the UFC, after appearing on The Ultimate Fighter 27 and then topping Allan Zuniga on the show’s finale in July.

“King Kage” made the move to Denver earlier this year where he now trains at Factory X Muay Thai. He also won the 2017 BluegrassMMA Pro Submission of the Year award for his triangle choke over Damonte Robinson at IT Fight Series 74, and he has all eight of his wins via stoppage, including seven via knockout or TKO.

Smith joins fellow Ohioan Jeff Hughes in earning a UFC contract via the show, as Hughes stopped Josh Appelt earlier this summer to earn his way into the Octagon.
