Garbrandt hails from Uhrichsville, Ohio and is a former UFC bantamweight champion. He now lives and trains in Sacarmento with Team Alpha Male.
The bout will be his first in Ohio since a first round TKO over Charles Stanford at NAAFS: Rock N Rumble 8 in 2014 that propelled him to the UFC.
He looks to snap out of a three-fight losing streak in his return to action for the first time in more than a year. “No Love” started his career with an 11-0 run that included winning the promotion’s 135-pound title with a decision over Dominick Cruz at UFC 206 in 2016. He lost the title to T.J. Dillashaw at UFC 217, and then was defeated by Dillashaw again at UFC 227 last year.
Garbrandt’s last time in action was March, when he lost via knockout against fast rising contender Pedro Munhoz at UFC 235. He’s currently the No. 8 ranked contender in the UFC’s bantamweight division.
Assuncao has hovered near the top of the UFC’s bantamweight rankings since making his debut in 2011 after a run in the WEC. He holds an 11-3 UFC record that includes wins over Dillashaw, Munhoz, and Aljamain Sterling. He comes in looking to snap a two-fight losing streak, however, after dropping bouts against Corey Sandhagen and Marlon Moraes this year.
UFC Fight Night Columbus is expected to be headlined by a heavyweight bout featuring Francis Ngannou vs. Jairzinho Rozenstruik.
